Pakistan’s e-commerce market keeps growing, and every year thousands of Pakistanis turn a product idea into an online store. If you want to start an online store in Pakistan in 2026, this guide walks you through the whole process — choosing what to sell, picking a platform, handling payments and delivery, understanding the real costs in PKR, and getting your first orders.
1Choose What to Sell
Most stores fail at this step, not the technical ones. Before spending anything, pick a product you can actually compete on.
Pick a product with proven demand
- Check marketplaces first. Browse Daraz, PriceOye and Facebook Marketplace for categories with lots of reviews and repeat sellers — reviews are proof of demand.
- Start narrow. “Men’s watches under PKR 5,000” beats “fashion” every time. A focused niche is cheaper to market and easier to rank for.
- Consider margins over passion. A product that costs PKR 400 to source and sells for PKR 1,200 survives ads and returns. A PKR 100 product with thin margins does not, especially once courier and COD costs bite.
- Think about shipping. Light, durable, non-fragile products are cheaper to deliver and easier to return. Electronics and glass are possible, but factor in the breakage and return rate.
Popular starting niches in Pakistan include women’s clothing and unstitched fabric, cosmetics, mobile accessories, home décor, herbal and organic products, kids’ items, and imported gadgets. Whatever you pick, order a few units yourself first and test quality — selling products you would not buy again is a slow way to die.
2Sort the Legal Basics Early
You can technically start selling on Facebook or WhatsApp today. But the moment you want a payment gateway, a courier account in your business name, or to scale properly, you need paperwork. Do this early — it is cheap and it unlocks everything else.
What to register
- Get a National Tax Number (NTN) through the FBR IRIS portal. As a sole proprietor this is quick and free.
- Register the business — sole proprietorship is fine for most beginners; register with SECP if you want a private limited company.
- Open a business bank account in the registered name. Banks ask for the NTN and registration documents.
- Appear on the Active Taxpayers List (ATL) — couriers and payment gateways treat this as a trust signal.
Total cost for a sole proprietorship setup is usually under PKR 10,000, often close to free if you file yourself. It also means your payments, receipts and taxes are clean from day one.
3Choose Your Platform
You have three realistic routes in Pakistan. Each suits a different stage.
Option A: Your own website (best long-term)
A store on your own domain — built with Shopify or WooCommerce — is the only option where you own the customer relationship, the traffic and the brand. No marketplace commissions, no algorithm deciding who sees your products.
- Shopify: Fastest to launch, all-in-one, roughly PKR 3,000 – 12,000/month depending on the plan. Great for beginners who want to focus on selling, not maintenance.
- WooCommerce (WordPress): Lower running costs, full control, no monthly subscription — you pay hosting (roughly PKR 10,000 – 25,000/year for decent shared or cloud hosting) and optional plugins. More flexible, but you or your developer handle updates and security.
If you are choosing between the two, our WordPress vs Shopify comparison for Pakistan breaks down the trade-offs in detail.
Option B: Marketplaces (fastest start)
Selling on Daraz, or on OLX and Facebook Marketplace, gets you in front of buyers immediately with no setup cost. The trade-off is commissions, price competition and the fact that you are building Daraz’s business as much as your own. Many successful stores start here and migrate to their own website once they have cash flow.
Option C: Social commerce (lowest cost)
Instagram, TikTok Shop and WhatsApp Business are how many Pakistani stores start — especially clothing, cosmetics and food. Zero platform cost, but everything is manual: order-taking, payment confirmation, delivery coordination. It works while you are small; it becomes a bottleneck fast.
Start where your buyers are today (often Instagram or Daraz), but plan your own website from the beginning. Your own store is what compounds — every rupee of SEO and brand equity goes to you. (Curious about the full budget? See our 2026 website cost guide for Pakistan.)
4Build the Store
Whether you DIY or hire a developer, every serious online store needs the same foundations.
The essentials
- A clear domain name — short, memorable, .com preferred (roughly PKR 2,500 – 4,000/year).
- Fast, reliable hosting — most local searches and orders happen on mid-range Android phones on mobile data. Compress images, use caching, and aim for a mobile PageSpeed score in the green.
- Prices in PKR with a simple checkout (fewer fields = more completed orders).
- Trust pages: About, Contact, Privacy Policy, Shipping Policy, Returns & Refunds, Terms of Service. Payment gateways require several of these before approval, and customers check them.
- Product pages that sell: real photos (your own, not supplier stock if possible), clear photos, sizes/measurements where relevant, PKR pricing with any discounts, and customer reviews once orders come in.
Pages every store needs
Home, Shop (with categories and filters), product pages, cart, checkout, contact, about, policies. Add a WhatsApp chat button — in Pakistan it is as expected as a contact form, and it converts.
5Set Up Payments (the Pakistan Reality)
This is where many guides written for Western markets mislead Pakistani founders. Here is how payments actually work here in 2026.
Cash on Delivery is still king
COD remains the dominant payment method for Pakistani online shopping — a majority of orders are still paid in cash at the door. Every store must offer it. The downsides are real: fake orders, refused deliveries and return charges from couriers. Mitigate them by confirming orders on WhatsApp or by call before dispatching, and negotiate your courier’s return policy in writing.
Add digital options anyway
COD brings the orders; digital payments bring the margin and reduce fake orders. Offer at least:
- JazzCash and Easypaisa — mobile wallets most of your customers already have. JazzCash Business and Easypaisa merchant accounts integrate directly with WooCommerce and Shopify via plugins or gateways.
- Bank transfer — simple to offer; just list your account details at checkout.
- Debit/credit cards — through local gateways like PayFast or Safepay, which handle cards and bank transfers. Gateway approval typically needs your NTN, business bank account, a live store and policy pages.
Stripe is not officially available in Pakistan; workarounds through foreign entities exist but are unnecessary for a local store.
Our practical setup
Offer COD + JazzCash/Easypaisa + one card gateway at launch. That covers virtually every Pakistani buyer. Add advance-payment discounts (e.g. 5% off prepaid orders) to nudge customers away from COD over time.
6Sort Delivery and Logistics
Your delivery experience is your brand for many customers. Choose carefully.
Main courier options
- TCS — the most reliable nationwide coverage; slightly more expensive.
- Leopards Courier — affordable and fast in urban areas; weaker rural coverage.
- Trax — good for bulk shipments, solid tracking.
- CallCourier — COD-friendly, flexible, popular with small sellers.
- Pakistan Post — cheapest option, reaches everywhere; slow.
For most new stores, Leopards or CallCourier for city orders plus TCS or Pakistan Post for rural coverage is a sensible split. Set clear delivery expectations on your site (e.g. “2–4 working days nationwide”) and beat them.
Packaging
Branded packaging is cheap marketing: a printed box or sticker costs little per unit and photographs well for social media. Weigh every packed parcel — couriers charge by weight slabs, and underestimating shipping costs eats your margin.
7Market the Store (Without Burning Cash)
Traffic is the real cost of an online store, not the website. Here is the order that works for Pakistani stores on a budget.
- Your own social channels. Instagram, Facebook and TikTok are where Pakistani shoppers discover products. Post product photos and short videos daily; sell in Stories and DMs.
- WhatsApp Business. Broadcast lists for offers, order updates and abandoned-cart follow-ups. It is the highest-converting channel for most local stores.
- Google and SEO. As your store grows, SEO becomes your cheapest customer-acquisition channel — it compounds while ads stop the day you stop paying. Category and product pages optimised for real search terms (“women lawn suits online Pakistan”) bring steady buyers. If you serve walk-in customers too, see our local SEO guide for Pakistani businesses.
- Paid ads. Facebook/Instagram ads and Google Shopping once you have proven margins. Start small (PKR 1,000 – 2,000/day), test one product, and scale only what returns more than it costs.
Do not spend on ads until your store converts: fix product pages, reviews and checkout first. Ads amplify a good store and expose a bad one.
₨How Much Does It Cost to Start? (Real PKR Numbers)

| Hosting (WordPress/WooCommerce) | PKR 10,000 – 18,000/yr | PKR 25,000 – 60,000/yr |
| Shopify subscription | PKR 35,000 – 145,000/yr | PKR 35,000 – 145,000/yr |
| Website build (if hired) | — | PKR 80,000 – 250,000+ |

| Realistic total to launch properly | ≈ PKR 150,000 – 400,000 (WooCommerce + stock), or PKR 100,000 – 250,000 starting on Daraz/social first | |
A lean social-commerce start can work on PKR 50,000 or less if you already have the product.
!Common Mistakes New Pakistani Stores Make
- Skipping the paperwork, then being unable to get a gateway or a decent courier rate.
- No return policy — or a vague one. A clear, fair return policy increases orders more than it increases returns.
- Supplier photos only. Customers spot stock photos instantly; real photos convert.
- Ignoring COD confirmation. A 30-second WhatsApp confirmation call before dispatch saves real money in returned parcels.
- Pricing without the hidden costs: courier charges, packaging, COD fees, returns, ad spend. Price on the true cost per order, not the product cost.
- Treating the store as finished at launch. Stores are living things — new products, reviews, content and speed fixes every month.
?Frequently Asked Questions
How much money do I need to start an online store in Pakistan?
A lean start is possible on PKR 50,000 – 100,000 (social commerce + small inventory). A proper store with its own website, payment gateway and launch marketing realistically needs PKR 150,000 – 400,000. See the cost table above for the full breakdown.
Is COD still necessary for an online store in Pakistan in 2026?
Yes. Cash on delivery remains the dominant payment method and skipping it costs you most of your orders. Offer COD alongside JazzCash, Easypaisa and a card gateway — then use small prepaid discounts to shift customers gradually.
Shopify or WooCommerce for a Pakistani store?
Shopify is faster to launch and easier to maintain; WooCommerce (WordPress) is cheaper long-term and more flexible, with no monthly subscription. Our WordPress vs Shopify comparison covers costs, gateways and SEO for the Pakistani market.
Do I need to register my business to sell online?
Not for your first sales on social media, but registration (NTN, bank account) is required to get payment gateways and courier accounts in your business name. It costs little and you should do it before you scale.
How do I get customers to trust a new online store?
Real product photos, a published return/refund policy, visible contact details and WhatsApp number, genuine customer reviews (even a handful), and consistent social media activity. Trust is the main currency — new stores that look anonymous do not convert.
How long before my online store becomes profitable?
With the right product and margins, many Pakistani stores see their first consistent sales within 2 – 3 months and reach profitability within 6 – 12 months — provided marketing is measured and margins cover COD returns and ads. Stores that guess at pricing rarely make it.
